Facts:

·        Born 18 July 1918

·        His father was a tribal chief

·        Graduated from university with a law degree in 1942

·        Joined the African National Congress (ANC) in 1944 who fought against apartheid

·        Was acquitted of treason in 1961

·        Sentenced to 5 years in prison in 1962 for setting up a military wing of the ANC

·        Sentenced to life imprisonment in 1964 for plotting of overthrow the Government

·        Freed in 1990

·        Voted President of ANC in 1991

·        Awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1993

·        Was instrumental in the new anti-apartheid constitution becoming law in 1996

·        Retired from ANC in 1999
